JWO AIRMEN KILLED CRASH WHILE INSTRUMENT FLYING i (P.A.) WELLINGTON, February 21. 1 Two members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force lost their lives when an aircraft operating from a North Island station crashed at 10.40 this morning, during instrument flying practice. * The personnel concerned were:— Sergeant Alfred Austin Carless. Father, Mr H. P. Carless, Epsom, Auckl3nd< Sergeant Albert Leonard Brittain, Mother, Mrs S. Brittain, Glen Eden. Auckland. WOMAN KILLED OUTRIGHT FIVE OTHERS IN HOSPITAL HEAD-ON COLLISION OF TWO CARS (P.A.) DUNEDIN. February 21. In a head-on collision between two cars near Omakau, about 7.45 p.m., Mrs Margaret Wilson Mclntosh, an elderly widow of Poolburn, was killed outright. Her daughter, Mrs Ferguson, who was in the car with Mrs Mclntosh, and four occupants of the other car (two of whom recently returned from the Middle East) were taken to hospital with injuries. TIMBER WORKER KILLED STRUCK BY PIECE OP WOOD Gilbert George, aged 38, a sawyer, of 484 Barbadoes street, St. Albans, suffered injuries resulting in his death in an accident at the Addington Timber Company’s yard shortly after 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. George was operating a circular saw when a piece of wood flew off, striking him on the head. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by ambulance, but on arrival was found to be dead. An inquest will be opened in Christchurch this morning. WOMAN’S BODY RECOVERED FROM RIVER (P.A.) GORE, February 21. The body of Catherine Jessie iewis, a married woman, aged 51, of Mmaura, was recovered from the Mataura river this afternoon. Earlier she was seen to jump into the river, but rescue attempts failed. FALL FROM TRAM Jean Austin, aged 19. of 31 Clarence road, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday suffering from abrasions to her face and hands, suffered when she fell from a tram. Machinery for OR Boring.—-Ap-proximately 650 tons of oil-boring equipment was taken to Westport by the s.s. Kakapo from New Plymouth, and the unloading ' was commenced yesterday. The machinery will be railed through to the New Zealand Petroleum Company’s new bore at NoTown. Work was delayed because of ram in the afternoon.
