Yesterday morning at Government House. Lieutenant-Colonel F. Waite was sworn in by the Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) as a member of the Legislative Council. Colonel Waite was on service overseas when he was reappointed to the Council.—(P.A.) In appreciation of the assistance given the Rangiora Returned Services’ Association in its early years, the president (Mr J. W. Macleod) and members of the executive visited Christchurch during the week-end and presented an electric jug and toaster to Mr E. F Willcox, who recently resigned the secretaryship of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association to accept a position in Wellington. Mr A, A. Boot <vas appointed City Rate Collector at a meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening, He will replace Mr J. K. Macdonald, who has retired. Mr Boot has been in the employment of the council since 1916, and has been collector of water charges since September. 1924. The appointment will take effect on April i. Tributes to the work done by the Rev. J. M. Bates, M.A., during his residence in Rangiora were paid at a farewell gathering held in the hall after the evening service at the John Knox Church on Sunday night. On behalf of the congregation, Mr C. I. Jennings presented Mr Bales with a substantial cheque and wished him success in his new position. Mr and Mrs Bates will leave Rangiora to-day for Karori, Wellington.
