CONVENIENCES IN CHRISTCHURCH
SHORTAGE SAID TO EXIST DISCUSSION BY COUNCIL “Men’s conveniences are distributed fairly evenly about the city, but I admit that there is a shortage of them for women,” said the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews), at the meeting of the Christchurch City Council last evening, when replying to a discussion on the question. It had been asked by Cr. C. D. W L. Sheppard whether the works committee of the council had yet decided to erect more conveniences in the city. Cr. Sheppard said he had been approached by several of the welfare workers in the camps adjacent to the city, who had urged the necessity for more adequate amenities of that sort. He said he had been told that the accommodation for men and women was totally inadequate. More conveniences would lead to a reduction of nuisance being done about the city. “No matter how many conveniences we have in the city we will still have a nuisance created and still have persons using the streets, lanes, and, shop entrances,” said Mr Andrews. "Chancery lane is the worst place for this sort of nuisance, but it is close to the biggest convenience in Christchurch. The men, I think, are fairly well provided for, but certainly there is a necessity for more conveniences for women. That is still to be reported on by the committee.” .
