MILK BELOW STANDARD
CONVICTION OF CITY FIRM WARNING FROM COUNCIL The abattoir, reserves, and milk committee of the Christchurch City Council recently issued a strong warning to a city dairy company, convicted for selling milk below standard. Tins was reported to the council last evening, and the report approved by councillors. The report of the committee is as follows; “In response to the committee s request, representatives of the Albany Dairy, Ltd., waited upon the committee to explain the company’s recent conviction for selling milk below the legal standard of butter-fat content. The representatives of the company stated that the sample for which it was convicted was taken from a sixgallon can containing four gallons of milk, from which had previously been tipped two gallons, without the contents being agitated. This was contrary to the definite instructions given to all members of the staff. As a result, the butter-fat content of the four gallons was reduced to benefit the two gallons previously poured off. They stated that the man responsible for this mistake has been dismissed, and the position with the manpower to-day is so extremely difficult, that although the company takes every precaution, it is possible that a mistake of this kind may occur. After hearing the explanation, the committee decided to give the company a strong warning, and also to advise the company that it must be responsible for the acts of its employees, and any future conviction will mean the council’s giving serious consideration to the cancellation of its licence.”
