HEALTH WEEK

EXHIBITION OPENS TO-DAY As part of its plan for educating the people in the ways of healthy living, the Department of Health, in collaboration with the civic authorities, has organised a Health Week campaign in Christchurch from to-day to Saturday next The central feature will be the department’s mobile health exhibit, which will be at King Edward Barracks. The exhibit, which is comprehensive in scope and novel in design, is a new departure in health education. Each section is in charge of a specialist, and full information on all relevant points is available to anyone. Good health is one of the first concerns of the family, and it is particularly important in time of war, when abnormal conditions and restrictions may lead to harm if the deficiencies are not provided for. The exhibition, using models as the basis of its teaching, shows, for instance, how diet enters into considerations of good health. It details the foods needed for each age group of childhood, with special sections dealing with ante-natal and post-natal care. Then is a dental section and displays featuring the use of skim milk for cooking, substitutes for vitamin C, foods which help to prevent anaemia and goitre, types of school lunches, and the diet for heavy workers will be on show. A special section, organised by the Women’s Institute and the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, deals with home-growing of vegetables and compost-heap making, and allied matters. The budding of fruit trees will be demonstrated, and a dehydrator for preparing dried fruits will be working. Moving picture shows, physical culture displays, and lectures will be given m the evening sessions. The exhibition will open at 1 p.m. today and will remain open until 10 p.m. to® res t °f the week, the exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and admission is free.
