BOWLS

WEST COAST CENTRE’S TOURNAMENT From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, February 20. The West Coast bowling tournament was concluded at Greymouth to-day. The green was heavy after rain. Remaining matches comprised post-section play in both the rinks and pairs. W. G. Ives (Canterbury), who qualified for post-sec-tion play in both the pairs and rinks, was unable to remain for the matches. Results of play were as follows: Championship Pairs Post Section Play.—E. Henham and R. Hoffman (Hokitika) 21 beat F. W. Shallcrass and E. R. Moss (Greymouth) 18. Final: T. Gallon and A. Taylor (Runanga) 21 beat Henham and Hoffman 14. In the final, both teams played good bowls, but Taylor was particularly brilliant with his drawing shots and the pair ran out good winners. Championship Rinks • Post-section Play.—O. de Lorenzo, A. de Lorenzo, F. Perrone, and V. Vitteta (Nelson) 19 beat W. Scott, E. Holmes, J. S. Robertson, and L. G. Mercer (Greymouth) 16; T. Goodall, A. Kilgour, A. Pollock, and P. Skoglund (Wellington) 20 beat E. Fairhall. F. W. Baillie, J. Howat. and J. Stokes (Cobden) 16. Second round: Vitteta 21 beat Skoglund 5. Splendid team work all through by the Nelson four saw them run out good winners over the Wellington veterans, who had played consistently good bowls throughout the tournament. F. Perrone, by his accurate driving, saved many shots and the four ran out comfortable winners in the finish. Another feature of the rink’s play was the driving shots of the skip, Vitteta. The final of the championship rinks was won by Moss’s rink (Greymouth), who beat Vitteta’s rink (Nelson) 22-16. Play throughout was of a high standard, and all members of both rinks played firstclass bowls. At the conclusion, Mr J. M. Bunt, on behalf of the president of the West Coast Bowling Centre, presented trophies to the winners of the rinks and pairs competitions, and said that the play of the winners and the runners-up in both competitions was of a high standard.
