AUSTRALIAN PLAN FOR UNEMPLOYED
VITAL CLAUSE IN BILL DEFEATED CANBERRA, Feb. IS) A vital clause in the Commonwealth Government’s Unemployment and Sickness Benefits Bill has been defeated by the Opposition in the Senate. The clause provided for the unemployment and sickness benefits scheme to be financed out of the national welfare fund. This is the fund from which £30,000,000 a year is paid from consolidated revenue. The clause was defeated because the Opposition considered that unemployment and sickness benefit payments should be financed by contributions from the workers. The voting was 16 for and 16 against. Motions must be passed through the Senate with a clear majority to be resolved in the affirmative. The numbers are even in the Senate until June 30, after which the Government will have a majority. It is expected that thei Government will now withdraw the mil, and will reintroduce it after June
