PRICE ORDERS FOR MEAT

LIMITS SET BY TRIBUNAL SCHEDULE OF CHARGES A schedule setting out full details of the maximum prices for meat allowed under the Price Tribunal’s Meat Price Order has been supplied by the Food and Rationing Controller (Mr J. E. Thomas). A statement accompanying the schedule of prices reads: “For the protection of the public the price of meat throughout New Zealand is controlled by price orders which name the limit prices that butchers may charge. These price orders are issued by the Price Tribunal. None of the various meats listed in the price orders can be sold at prices higher than those quoted in the price order, but no butcher is prevented from charging lower prices if he so desires.” The limit prices per lb for prime quality meat all over New Zealand until June 30, 1944, are as follows; Ox and heifer beef—Rump steap, Is 2d; fillet steak, Is 4d; beef steak 9d; stewing steak, chuck 7d, blade 8d; sirloin, lOd; sirloin, rolled and boneless, Is Id; prime ribs, 71d; prime ribs, rolled and boneless, lOJd; chuck ribs, sd; back ribs, rolled and boneless, 8d; wing ribs, lOd; topside, in pieces 41b and over, 9d; bolars, 7d; gravy beef and shin beef, 6d; minced beef, 6d; corned silverside, lOd; corned rolled brisket, 7d; brisket, 3d; flat rib, 4d; legs and shins, whole, 2£d; halves, thick end, 3d; halves, knuckle end, thin flank, 2d; suet, 4d; dripping, 6d; tripe, in North Island, 6d; elsewhere, 7d; sausage-meat, sd. Cow beef.—The respective prices fixed as for ox and heifer beef reduced in every case by 20 per cent. Mutton (wether and maiden ewe).— Legs, whole, lOd; shank end, up to 61b, lid; fillet end, lOd; forequarters, whole, sd; shank end, figd; shoulder-, 7d; necks and breasts, sd; neck, best end, 6Jd; scrag end, sd; loin, 9d; chops, middle loin, Is; rib, 9d; leg, lid; stewing, 7d; flaps, 2d; cutlets, trimmed, Is 2d. Hogget mutton—that is to say, mutton derived from a young sheep of either sex, showing two prominent incisor teeth: the respective prices fixed for wether and maiden ewe mutton, increased in every case by Id per pound. Ewe mutton (other than maiden ewe)— The respective prices fixed for maiden ewe mutton, reduced in every case by 20 per cent. Lamb.—Forequarter, lOd; hindquarter, Is; legs, Is 2d; loin, Is 2d; chops. Is 2d. Veal.—Fillet, lid; loin, 9d; chops, 10d' steak, lid; rump steak, Is 2d; cutlets, Is; rolled, lOd. Pork.—Leg, Is; loin, Is; chops, Is 2d; forelom, lOd; corned hand, Bid; corned belly, lOld.

A note attached to the schedule stated that in the meantime pork will not be available under the meat rationing scheme.
