ARGENTINE AND THE AXIS
RELATIONS MAY BE BROKEN
(Rec. 10 p.m.) MONTEVIDEO, JSin. 25. The newspaper “La Razon.” in a special dispatch from Buenos Aires, reports that the Argentine Government has signed a decree breaking off relations with the Axis. The influential Buenos Aires newspaper. “Noticias Graficas,” in a front page leading article, says: “The Axis has taken advantage of our good faith. The demonstration that spies are active in the Argentine might lead the Government to take strong action against the Axis nations.” The Buenos Aires correspondent of the Associated Press of America says that the Argentine Foreign Minister (Senor Gilbert) told a press conference that Argentina was prepared to take the final step to eliminate all espionage activities endangering the dignity of the nation.
According to the United Press, Senor Gilbert asserted that there was no change in Argentina’s relations with Germany. General Ramirez, broadcasting later, confined himself to the San Juan earthquake, without announcing the expected rupture of relations with the Axis.
