SPORTING

DUNEDIN J.C.

PROSPECTS FOR TO DAY The summer meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club will be held at Wingatui to-day, when some more close contests are promised. Main interest will be centered in the Jockey Club Handicap, and in the Hazlett Gold Cup. The latter has attracted a strong field, and in the absence of Kindergarten, the race should command a big pool. The course is likely to provide similar going to that on Cup Day, and under the win and place system, the following horses can be expected to be well supported:— U a.m.—Owhiro Hurdles: Nightcalni. Heidleberg, Native Chief. 11.44 a.m.—Novice Handicap: Good Cast, Chestnut Glow, St. Nattar.

12.28 p.m.—Flying Fortress Handicap Lord Advocate. Invulnerable, Hearth.

1.12 p.m.—Jockey Club Handicap: Amorlad, Bascule, The Raker. 1.56 p.m.—Hopeful Handicap: Joygiver, Lyndal. Periwig, 2.40 p.m.—Abbotsford Handicap: Sal’s Pal, Full Chase, Nigger Lad. 3.24 p.m.—Hazlett Memorial Handicap: Scottish Dale, Aurora Australis, Royal Flight. 4.8 p.m.—Waihola Handicap: Abdicate, Gunga Din, Retriever.

REEFTON J.C. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY Tire Reefton Jockey Club will hold its summer meeting on the Reefton course to day. All of the fields have filled well, and include practically all of the horses raced at Greymouth. The single pool system will be in use. and the following horses are likely to be well supported--12.30 p.m.—Noble Hack Handicap: Owaka, Hamish, Hurry Home. 1.10 p.m.—Novice Stakes: Falconbridge, Silver Sal. 1.50 p.m.—Broadway Trot: Wavel, Mauri McKinney Ovend. 2.30 p.m.—Highweight Handicap; Wise Girl, Gunyah, Ail Night. 3.10 p.m.—lrving Memorial: Big Top, Rockery, Owaka. 3.50 p.m.—Stewards’ Hack: In Chancery. Rout, Retainer. 4.30 p.m.—Reefton Trot; Northern Lass. Noble Reta, Ovend. 5.10 p.m.—Farewell Handicap: Wise Girl. Rout, Mauretania. TURF GOSSIP i Interesting Candidate Scottish Dale is likely to dispute favouritism in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin to-day with Aurora Australis. An Early Move Palfrev was taken north this week by T. H. Gillett and was one of the first of the visiting horses to reach Trentham. He is one of the favourites for the Wellington Cup, In which he will be ridden by A. Messervy. The Joker Although The Joker is an acceptor at Wingatui he will not be eligible to start because the certificate covering his transfer from New Zealand to Australia had not been returned when the horse was shipped home. A Strong Pair Macedoine was taken from Invercargill to Wingatui this week, and will be sent to Trentham on Tuesday. L. J. Ellis has ben engaged to ride her in the Wellington Cup. Her stablemate, Sascha, will be ridden at Wingatui by W. H. Ellis, and in her present form she will be very dangerous in the Jockey Club Handicap.

Good Prospects It was reported earlier in the week that Amorlad had returned to Rlccarton after racing in the Dunedin Cup. This was incorrect as, although he missed the New Year engagements, he remained at Wingatui and was responsible for some pleasing work during the past week. He is likely to be one of the favoulrtes today. A soft track would be to his advantage, but although some rain fell yesterday there was not sufficient to cause much change from the firm going in evidence a fortnight ago.

Cup Candidates , , Wellington Cup horses who performed with distinction during the holidays were the top-weight, Kindergarten, who won the Clifford Plate at his only appearance; Lord Chancellor, who won the Auckland Cup: Merry May and Lou Rosa, who were the place-getters to Lord Chancellor, Alethea. who won the Wairarapa Cup after being beaten a head in the Manawatu Cup; Don Quex, winner of the Manawatu and Marton Cups; Foxola, who won the Auckland Racing Club Handicap: Palfrey, who won the Dunedin Cup; Macedoine, the Invercargill Cup winner; Royal Merit, who won the Nathans’ Memorial; and Tara King, who won the Auckland Christmas Handicap. Prominent cup candidates who were not among the winners or did not race during the holidays are Representative, Gladynev, Battledress, Happy Ending, Amorlad, The Joker, Classform, and Glenfalloch. The above-mentioned horses will comprise a good foundation for the Wellington Cup. A Big Weight . .. In awarding Kindergarten 10-9 in the Wellington Cup. Mr Coyle has given the horse the same weight as he had in this race last year, when he did not start. The weight-carrying record while the race was run at a mile and a half was 10-4, which Advance carried when he won as a six-year-old in 1903. The record since the Wellington Club has raced at Trentham is 9-9. which Vintage won with in 1935.

A Powerful Team The feature of the holiday racing was the all-conquering run of the Dominion's leading trainer, F. Smith, whose team won eight races at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, including the handicap double on ihe first and last days, says the "Dominion.” One sidelight which gave a good line on the strength of this stable was provided by the Glasgow Handicap, the open sprint on the middle day. When the handicaps were issued Smith provided six of the seven top-weights. Smith’s run of success is reminiscent of the days when the late R. J. Mason and the late F. Tilley were sweeping the board with teams of similar strength and class. Horses from Smith’s stable are freely entered at the Wellington Cup meeting, but how many of them will be produced is not yet known. Lord Chancellor would be a big attraction, but on the occasion of his only visit to Trentham last year he found great difficulty In handling the left-handed running. The Government’s Share Taxation payable on the Auckland Racing Club’s three-day summer meeting amounts to £57,503. Smart Sprinters Sweet Biscuit, winner of the Railway Handicap, has proved herself one of the fastest three-year-olds of the season, yet her breeding suggests that she should stay better than she should sprint. She is by Broiefort, a Blandford horse bred to several staying lines, and is from Classform’s dam, who was by Greyspear from a mare bred to Boniform, Merriwee, and Stepniak. Sweet Biscuit is another instance of Broiefort’s versatility as a sire. Many of his progeny run middle distances well, while others excel for their speed. Impressive Wins One of the most impressive of the provincial cup winners during the holidays was Corday, who won the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth and the Stratford Cup. Each time he beat his field convincingly by a good margin, and with something in tend. This horse was not entered for the Wellington Cup. Saint Joachim, a two-year-old half-brother by Night Raid to Corday, is owned by Mr C. Tansey, of Christchurch, and is in G. Ridgway's stable.

Ankle Fractured Mr C. F. Hartland. the South Island stipendiary steward, who met with an accident recently and fractured an ankle, is making good progress but will not be able to attend the Wingatui Racing Club’s meeting to-day. Mr Morgan O’Brien, jun.. will act as stipendiary steward at this meeting.
