SOCIAL SECURITY
Sir,—When the Government was contesting the last election, its policy was for economic security and freedom from want for all. An example was social security, the friend of the sick and poor. I do not find it so. Compelled to apply for this security, in the form of sickness benefit, to maintain my family while I have rest and medical treatment, I am informed that I am entitled to £4 weekly sickness benefit and any allowance paid me by my work’s sick fund will be deducted from what is paid by the Social Security Department. Being a tenant of a State rental house, I thought I might get a little assistance from the State Advances Corporation, but was told that if my rent was not paid, I would have to get out.—Yours, etc., FATHER OF SIX. January 6, 1944.
