SEA CADET CORPS
ENDEAVOUR TO RAISE FUNDS An attractively-producdd booklet with full-page illustrations on art paper, has been issued by the Canterbury branch of the Navy League Sea Cadets, and is being sent to members of the Navy League and interested firms and individuals, with the idea of enlisting support for the sea cadet movement. The Canterbury Corps of the Sea Cadets was the first of its kind to be formed in the Dominion, and, is now the official headquarters of the movement in New Zealand. The committee of the corps is anxious to proceed with the refitting of the cadets’ barracks on Quail Island, and with extensions to the training hall at Chrystall street, Richmond. Additional equipment is also needed by the corps to provide for the large number of boys who have expressed their desire to join up with the corps. Thanks to the keen interest and active support of business firms who have sponsored the reproduction of photographs in the booklet, it is possible to gain an insight from it into the varied activities of members of the Sea Corps. “Both the Old Country and New Zealand are islands dependent upon the freedom of the seas for our very existence," says Commodore Sir Atwell Lake. Chief of Naval Staff in New Zealand, in a message enclosed with the booklet. “We depend on our Navy and the Merchant Navy to maintain that freedom. The spirit of clean and honourable adventure must be maintained. And last, the sea is still the principal connecting link between the Old Country and New Zealand. The sea cadet organisation performs an invaluable service in inculcating and fostering a full realisation of these facts in the minds of our young folk upon whom the future depends, and imbuing in them a love of the sea and a true appreciation of the meaning of sea power/* '
