VICEREGAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, December 5. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) received this morning the Hon. William C. Burdett, who presented his letters of credence as Minister for the United States in New Zealand. This afternoon his Excellency, attended by Captain R. Warden, A.D.C., left Wellington for Waitangi, Auckland, and Hastings. He will return to Wellington on December 16. Professor Allan Nevins, the special representative in the Dominion of the Office of War Information, Washington, arrived in Christchurch on Saturday from Timaru, where on Friday he gave a public address on “The American Outlook To-day.’’ Dr. C. H. McKenzie has been appointed medical superintendent of Pukeora Sanatorium, Waipukurau. Dr. McKenzie has been senior medical officer at the district hospital for three years and r°cently has been relieving at Pukeora. The Hon. W. E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives and until recently M.P. for Napier, has decided to make his home at Tauranga, where he intends to practise law after the Christmas vacation. Mr Barnard’s term of office as Speaker will end when Parliament meets and the House elects his successor. Mr W. P. Endean, the former National member of Parliament for Remuera, was presented with a gold cigarette case from constituents of the electorate at a gathering in Auckland held to welcome the Leader oi the Opposition (Mr S- G. Holland), back from Australia. The presentation was made by Mr Holland, who referred to, the loyalty and cooperation alwavs given him by Mr Endean. Mrs Endean was presented with two chairs. Mr F. J. Perham, Conservator of Forests at Hokitika, who has been chairman of the Timber Industry Advisory Committee since its inception in May, 1942, on Saturday intimated to the committee that, because of his transfer to the North Island, he would be resigning from the position. The committee placed on record appreciation of Mr Perham’s work as chairman and his services to the millers and the Timber Workers’ Union. Messrs J. S. Robertson (Sawmillers Association), F. L. Turley (Timber Workers’ Union), and G. G. M. Mitchell (Manpower Officer) paid tributes to Mr Perham, whose successor will be the new conservator, Major R. Biggs. ___
