Action in Earthquakes The old advice to get into the open in an earthquake was of doubtful value.said Mr H. F. Baird, director of ine Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, to tne Christchurch branch of the itoyaj Society of New Zealand last evening. It had now been shown that HO per cent, of fatalities in earthquakes occurred among persons going outside and being overwhelmed by falling objects. A severe earthquake often made it impossible for people to move, and it was now considered prujqent to get under doorways, arches. tables. A careful survey of the ■ifhouse should be made to ensure that ■ beds and other furniture likely to be frequently occupied were in safe situations.
