INQUEST AT TIMARU

SEQUEL TO SUPREME COURT CASE

A verdict that Charles James Keenan died at the Timaru Public Hospital on September 8, 1943, from compression of the brain, resulting from the rupture of the meningeal artery, the injury being caused on September 6 when he was struck on the face by James Keith Ward, was returned by the Coroner (Mr H. Morgan) at an inquest , held at Timaru yesterday. .' Senior-Detective Ernest Milton Thomas gave evidence thqt Ward, a flying officer, was .charged with manslaughter, He was committed to the Supreme Court at Timaru for trial. The first jury, said Senior-Detective Thomas, had disagreed, and at the second trial Ward was acquitted on all charges. "It is clear from the evidence tendered before me that the injury was caused by Keenan being struck in the face by. Ward, using his closed fist,” said the Coroner. ‘‘That evidence was sufficient to support the bringing of a charge of manslaughter against Ward, who was acquitted, on all counts. The evidence, however, was tendered before me. It showed that Keenan’s injuries followed from a blow struck by Ward. Following on that, Keenan died at the Timaru Public Hospital."
