IMPORTATION OF PIG FOODS
SUPPLIES OF WHEAT AND BARLEY MEAL Imports of wheat and barley meal are now being made by the Government to meet the feed requirements of pig producers. Advice of this was given by Mr B. E. Keiller, representative of the National Pig Industry Council on the Pig Meats Advisory Committee, in a report to his executive, whch was received by the management committee. of the Canterbury District Pig Council last evening. In his report, Mr Keiller said that 3800 tons of barley meal were being imported through the Internal Marketing Division at present prices for delivery up to the end of February, and a further 5000 tons of wheat meal through the Wheat Committee for delivery up to the end of February also. Tentative arrangements were being made by the Government for the purchase of approximately another 4000 tons of wheat meal for distribution in March, pending negotiations now in train with the Australian Government falling through. “Any importation of foodstuffs after the expiry of existing contracts will be of wheat meal as there is definitely no barley meal available,” said Mr Keillor’s report. “The new negotiations in train are for wheat meal and not whole grain as the difficulty and cost of grinding in the Dominion would be too great.”
