ARMY EDUCATION WORK: IN AUSTRALIA From Our Own Correspondent SYDNEY, October 20. • Wall newspapers—printed news.itenu displayed on a notice board—are to W: published daily in every Australian;; Army camp. Formerly they were used in forward areas as a substitute newspapers and periodicals. Their edu* > cational value was recognised an» Army Education officers in each can® were instructed to establish them. Boards 6ft by 3ft are fixed to the walls of mess huts. To them are pinned newspaper cuttings dealing with t&e war in. various theatres, national and international politics, and general neW& Some of the cuttings contain articles on current affairs. In areas where new** papers are not readily available, the education officer summarises new* picked up on the radio, and types of writes it fo t pinning up on the board. Maps of countries figuring in the day’s news are also pinned on the boards, and coloured streamers cod' nect places of interest with the letter* press referring to them. A historical political, or geographical background of places mentioned in the news is also added.
Where possible the wall newspaper is illustrated with instructive or topical photographs. The Army education officer is thrown mostly on his own resources to obtain material and news for his wall newspaper. Many of his special articles are drawn from the portable library of 50 books and an atlas issued to him.
