The Deputy-Prime Minister (the Hon. W. Nash) announced last evening that the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) was recovering very satisfactorily from his operation.—(P.A.)

The Minister of Works and Railways (the Hon, R. Semple) will visit Ashburton on Friday to confer with the Ashburton County Council on any matters the council wishes to put before him. Mr Semple will make an'inspection of irrigation works the day before.

The Hon. Mr Justice Finlay took his seat on the Supreme Court Bench for the first time yesterday in Wellington, when a defended divorce case came before him and a jury of 12. — (P.A.) Yesterday, Detective-Sergeant E. M. Thomas, who is in charge of the detective office at Timaru, 1 received notice of his promotion to the rank of senior detective. Senior-Detective Thomas was formerly stationed in Christchurch. Reference to the death of Messrs N. B. Smith, J. M. Green, E. W. Elliott, and C. Stuart, members of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, was made at a meeting of the association’s executive last evening.

Inspector M. Flanagan, who has retired from his position in charge of the Timaru police district, will leave Timaru to-morrow and intends living in Auckland. Inspector D. L. Calwell, of Greymouth, who has been appointed as Inspector Flanagan’s successor, will arrive in Timaru shortly to take over his new duties.

Mr B. Grant, who has retired from the Department of Agriculture after 40 years’ service, received a presentation from members of the staff of the department in Christchurch at a recent farewell gathering. The stock superintendent for the Canterbury district (Mr E. Elphick) presided, and tJie presentation was made by the Director of the Livestock Division (Mr W. C. Barry). Mr Grant was inspector of dairies in Christchurch from 1914 to 1924, and for the. last nine years has been the principal inspector of the livestock division in the Christchurch district.

Dr. E. C. Hayes has been appointed medical officer to the Christchurch Tramway Board in succession to Dr. G, M. L. Lester, who has resigned. The board yesterday recorded its appreciation of the services of Dr. Lester. Dr. Hayes’s appointment is for the duration of the war and six months thereafter.

Messrs S. Schofield, J. Shankland, and G. Manning have been appointed to represent the Canterbury district council of the Workers' Educational Association at the annual Workers’ Educational Association conference at Wellington on December 4.
