Lieutenant A. M. W. West-Watson, a son of Archbishop West-Watson, who is serving in the New Zealand Infantry, has been promoted to the rank of captain. A cable message received in Wellington on Saturday says that Lieuten-ant-General L. H. van Oyen has arrived in Australia to take up his duties as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Netherlands Indies Army. Mr Robert Gilbert, of St. Albans, one of. the oldest identities in the province of Canterbury, will celebrate his ninety-sixth birthday to-day. Som of the Maori princess Te Marino, of Onawe, and William Gilbert, an English adventurer who came to New Zealand among the crew of an American whaler, Mr Gilbert was born at Tikao Bay, Banks Peninsula, in 1848, two years before the arrival of the First Four Ships. Mr A. G. Lake has been appointed deputy-registrar of marriages, births, and deaths for the district of Mount Grey. Mr L. L. Street has been appointed to a similar position for the district of Rakaia.
Mr F. D. Cornwell, national secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Labour since its formation in 1937,, has decided because of health reasons to retire from that position at - the annual conference next year. Mr Cornwell came from Scotland and arrived in New Zealand in 1907, since when he has lived in Wellington. He was the second workers’ delegate selected to represent New Zealand at the International Labour Conference at Geneva in 1935, He is a member of the Industrial Emergency Council and the Apprenticeship Committee and the Hours Committee of the council. He was also until recently a member of the Stabilisation Commission,
