Christchurch Building and Land Society (Permanent)—At the seventieth annual general meeting of members, the chairman, Mr A. S. Taylor,,made reference to Messrs G. H. Cooper and F. D. Neave, two old and loyal members who had died during the year, He said that the society at the present time was operating under certain war-time regulations and restrictions and ventured the opinion that some at least of these would continue in force for some time after the termination of hostilities, as was the case after 1918. In his, opinion the housing shortage was more acute than ever, and recent statistics showed the lowest urban building figures for the last 22 years. The difficulty of obtaining materials seemed likely to accentuate the trouble. The Land Sales Act had- given rise to much criticism, but it was obvious that some form of control was inevitable and to a certain extent desirable. The rehabilitation and housing of our returning men would be a problem of gigantic proportions, requiring, much study and intelligent organisation. In this worthy work building societies would, if allowed the opportunity, play an important part. During the year a further of £IOO had been made to the "Canterbury Patriotic Fund, and £SOOO subscribed to liberty loans, making £IO.OOO in the three loans. Mr Taylor >said that members had every reason to feel gratified at the steady progress of their society over the last 10 years. Members’ funds had increased from £105,462 to £127,890, and reserves from £34,500 to £63,312. The society was in a very strong position, and with the continued goodwill of the public could look forward to the future with every confidence. Messrs T. D. Harman and W. S. MacGlbbon were reelefcted directors, and Messrs S. W. Jameson and E. R. Cayglll were reappointed auditors, Kauri Timber Dividend.— I The directors of Kauri Timber announce that, subject to audit, they have resolved to recommend that a dividend of 3 per cent, be paid for. the half-year ended August 31, making, with the interim dividend paid in June. 5 per cent, for the year.—(P.A.)
