DOCTOR ON TRIAL
DETECTIVE GIVES EVIDENCE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. October 29. ■- The trial of George Brownlee Isdale, aged 51, medical practitioner, of Ngaruawahia, on seven charges of unlawfully using an instrument or other means to procure miscarriage, was continued before Mr Justice Fair ,to T day, the fourth day of the hearing. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr V. R. Meredith) and Mr K. C. Aekins are conducting the prosecution, and Messrs G. Skelton and A. Hall Skelton appear for the defence. , The director of surgery at the Waikato Hospital (Dr. Graham) was further cross-examined at length concerning medical aspects of the cass. In answer to Mr Meredith,, witness said there'was no necessity to take patients by night to different houses and examine them under an anaesthetic to find out their condition. After two more women had given evidence, Detective-Sergeant W. R Murray, of Hamilton, said that in the course of his inquiries he had had four interviews . with accused. Constable Henry and he made joint notes. When told it was alleged that he had been performing criminal abortions under the guise of normal operations, accused said that was hot so. He added that, if in his. professional capacity he considered an operation was in the best interests of a patient, from a medical point of view, that was his business and had nothing to do with anybody else. He denied he was performing criminal abortions. The hearing was adjourned until Monday.
