FURLOUGH MEN’S APPEALS
OBJECTION TO HEARING BY CIVILIANS AUCKLAND R.S.A. VIEW (P.A.) AUCKLAND. October 10. The Auckland Returned Services Association yesterday sent the following telegram to Dominion headquarters, Wellington:— “Appeals against further overseas service by furlough men are to be heard in a few days by the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board consisting of civilians. We request you to press the Minister to appoint at once special boards comprising returned men of the last War, or this war. or both, to hear these appeals. We suggest special use be made of Mr Cyril Sneddon, at present oh the No. 2 board.” The president (Mr A. P. Postlewaite), in a statement, said several men who intended to appeal had raised strong objections to having their cases heard by appeal board members who had not seen active service and could not therefore deal with cases from the point of view of personal knowledge of warfare. Mr Postlewaite considered no person who had not himself served his country overseas should be placed in the position, of saying whether a man who had returned should again be sent overseas on active service.
