SECULAR EDUCATION AND JUVENILE CRIME
Sir,—Assuming that A. Graeme Duffy’s figures are correct, they, like most statistics, prove nothing either way. For we do not know what kind of offences were involved, how many trivial or non-criminal'. Also, the Catholics of Liverpool are mostly the very poor, forced to live in slum conditions; if Catholic children there are wor'se than others it is probably environment that is to. blame. Other things being equal, Catholic education is bound to produce more moral citizens than secular education, because the Church teaches very definitely what is right or wrong, and gives the only rational • arguments, and practical help, for choosing right and avoiding wrong. Statistics like those quoted for Illinois may include many who have had no religious education and know little of any religion. Most prisoners describe themselves as of some religion, often' from motives of self interest.—Yours, etc., G. F. SEWARD. Lincoln, October 8, 1943. ■
