FEE FOR FUNERALS

* SYNOD WITHDRAWS PROPOSAL

The possibility of a fee for funerals was brought to the notice of the Christchurch Diocesan Synod in its closing stages last night. As the hour was late, however, and the house de- ; pleted, the following motion, widely... stood in the name of Mr H. S. Hobbsi* was withdrawn: — ( “That this synod approves of the atpv 11 visability of a definite charge—say £2 2s—being made for funerals—fees to be collected by the undertaker,, and paid into the general grants fund to be distributed among the clergy drawing the smaller grades of stipends: that this decision be brought before both the National Council of Churches and General Synod.’/ Mr H. A. Wade protested against the withdrawal of the motion. It was the outcome of a meeting of the laity, he said, many of whom were anxious to see it gtf* through. Mr Hobbs replied that he would reintroduce it at the next session of synod.
