TUESDAY (Before Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M.) WITIiOUT LIGHTS

When charged with riding a cycle at night without a light and asked by the Clerk of the Court whether he would Elead guilty or not guilty, Noel Yates lucksbury said, “I will not plead either way until I have made an explanation.” The Magistrate: Do you plead guilty or not guilty? "Guilty,’’ said Ducksbury. Inspector J. C. James, representing the traffic department of the Christchurch City Council, said Ducksbury had been a pest throughout to officers of the traffic department. He usually had a light, but would not put it on. Several of the inspectors had had trouble with the defendant.

Ducksbury said he had had difficulty In securing a battery for his lamp, and on the roads used it as little as possible. He said “on > the night when the traffic cop had collected him" he had stopped to listen to some music. He had turned the light on at every comer. The Magistrate; The traffic department has apparently had trouble with you, and if you persist in your present attitude I will start with a £5 fine and will raise it every time. This time you will be ordered to pay costs. . TRAFFIC BREACHES For haVing no warrant of fitness for moto“-cars, Albert Leo Armstrong and Alan Dalton were each fined 10s, and Augustus Florence and Roy Graham Holmes 20s each. For exceeding the speed limit of 30 miles an hour, Henry William Lawrence was fined £2 and Philip Simmons 20s. For failing to keep to the left, Jack S. V. Bott was fined 20s and for not having a heavy traffic licence, Frederick S. Blogg was fined £2. REMANDED Alexander Wallace Copley (Mr W. R. Lascelles) was remanded to appear on September 27 on a charge of being an idle and disorderly person, in that he habitually consorted with reputed thieves and persons with no visible means of support. OBSCENE LANGUAGE Reginald Phillips (Mr W. R. Lascelles), a showman and salesman, pleaded guilty to the use of obscene language in a public place. He was fined £6, in default 21 days’ imprisonment. THEFT OP CYCLE For the theft of a cycle valued at £B, Arthur t Herbert Jenkins, a soldier, was fined £lO, in default 21 days’ imprisonment, accused to make restitution as directed by the probation officer.
