FILM STRIPS
USE IN PUBLICISING SOUTH ISLAND
A report on a visit of Mr W. H. Harris, supervisor of teaching aids to the Education Department, Wellington. was given at a recent meeting of the emergency committee of the South Islands Travel Association. Mr Harris had stated that his department was very anxious to secure film 'strips of scenic attractions in the South Island. With the exception of one of Hanmer Springs, there were no other film strips on the South Island in the Government’s film library. ' There was a growing demand for these film strips, which could no longer be imported, the report stated, and an opportunity was provided for the Travel Association further to publicise the South Island by this means. The president (Mr H. L. Gibson) pointed out that to cover adequately the whole of the South Island, nine film strips would be necessary. The whole thing resolved itself into a matter of costs. He agreed with the view that the film strip opened up a new avenue of publicity for the South Island, but said he could not see how the association could stand the whole cost of producing nine film strips. Each district would have to make some contribution if it wanted to avail itself of this publicity. There was no doubt, he added, about the value of showing the pictures to about 290,000 school children, most of whom lived in the North Island, After some further discussion, it was decided to obtain additional information. ,
