OBITUARY
MR J. G. C. BAKER (P.A.) INVERCARGILL. Sept. 2. The death has occurred of Mr James George Charles Baker engineer to the Wallace County Council, who. over a long period of‘years, took a prominent part in the public affairs of Otautau and western Southland Mr Baker whs born in Invercargill in 1881. a son of Mr G. C.Bakei, a well-known business man in Dunedin for many years. MR D. K. LEED The death occurred recently, in Wellington, of Mr Donald K Leed, factory representative in New Zealand for Morris Industries Exports. Ltd. Mr Leed was born in Cambridge. England, in 1898, and joined the Morris Group of Companies in 1923, and had since served the company in Persia. West Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. At one stage he was a teStdriver for Morris Industries’ cars. Mr Leed had previously visited this Dominion in 1935-36. and had been resident here since August. 1939. In 1942, with the consent of Lord Nuffield, Mr Leed joined the office if the Factory Controller in an honorary capacity to assist in the manufacture of munitions, and thereafter devoted his energies to this end. He was re sponsible for the production of gas masks and steel helmets, and was active in the rubber and the ceramic industries His training and experience overseas made him fitted for dealing with production problems throughout New Zealand. During the last war. Mr Leed enlisted at a very early age and served in the Royal Flying Corps and later the R.A.F., being promoted to commissioned rank He is survived by his wife and a daughter. SELDON The death occurred at Ashburton on Wednesday of Mr Frederick William Seldon, a resident of Ashburton for more than 40 years, and a well-known grain merchant He came to New Zealand from Wales with his parents at an early age. and was educated at Nelson He joined the staff of Priedlander Bros., Ltd. Ashburton as- a voung man and remained with that firm for many years later commencing business with hij brother as a grain merchant under the name of Seldon Brothers. Mr Seldon took an active interest in civic affairs He was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the Ashburton
Borough Council for eight years, .ne first president of the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce, president of the Ashburton branch of the Grain and Seed Merchants’ Association, president of the Ashburton Lawn Tennis Club for about 20 years, president of the Mid-Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association treasurer of the Ashburton Trot ting Club, a member of the Ashburton Racing Club a former great chief of the Ashburton Savage Club, a member oi the Ashburton Rugby Union for some years and a member of the County Club. Ashburton He also took an interest in athletics and was a member of the Ashburton Athletic and Cvcling Club He is survived by his widow one sor Mr W F Seldon and one daughter.
