RAILWAY PORTERS’ WAGES
+ APPEALS TO MANPOWER COMMITTEE Two 18-year-old railway porters, David Lory Blanchard and Basil Oliver Prue, appealed to the Industrial Manpower Committee at Christchurch yesterday against the decision of the Manpower Officer at Greymouth refusing them permission to terminate their employment with the Railway Department at Greymouth. The appellants said they left Greymouth after six days, because they had no money. Their net wages were £2' 17s 8d a week, out of which they had to pay £1 17s 6d a week board, in addition to 4s for meals on many days when they were on shift work. When in Christchurch their average earnings were £4 because of overtime, which was not available in Greymouth. The chairman (Mr K. G. Archer) said he thought the youths had been hasty in leaving their employment, but the committee would adjourn the cases to enable the Railway Department to make more reasonable arrangements. An appeal by Cecil Walter Reeve against refusal to permit him to terminate his employment with P. and D. Duncan, Ltd., was granted on the evidence contained in two medical certificates.
