HELP FOR MAORI COMMUNITY
WAIREWA COUNCIL’S DECISION It had been suggested to the council that it should help the Maori population of the district by improving roads said the chairman (Mr F. Coop) at a meeting of the Wairewa County Coun cil. The council approved Mr Coop’s oroposal that it should write to the Minister of Native Affairs suggesting the council be given authority to imorove the road to the native cemetery Cr. W H. Montgomery said the attention of tht Minister should also be drawn to the spread of noxious weeds 01 native lands in the Little River district. which, he said, was alarming. In reply to the council’s letter, the Department of Internal Affairs wrote that a cross would be forwarded to Little River for the grave of a member of the Maori Battalion. Private P Taylor, 2nd N.Z.E.F.. who had died since his return to New Zealand.
