SPORTING

GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE ANGLO-FRENCH WINS FROM NOKO BASHFUL LADY’S SECOND WINTER CUP The Grand National Steeplechase meeting was opened at Riccarton on Saturday in unfavourable weather; but the weather gradually Improved as the programe progressed, and although there was an occasional light drizzle the racing was carried out under reasonably comfortable conditions. The track was cut up fairly badly after the first few races, and the going was much heavier than has usually been the case at a National meeting. With big fields, an early start was made with the programme, and although the closing of the machine in the concluding event was a quarter of an hour behind the advertised time, patrons appreciated the unusual timetable which enabled them to return home at an early hour. Speculation was very brisk, and no doubt but for the attendance being affected by the uninviting conditions in the forenoon, a record turnover for a Grand National day would have been recorded. The sum of £101,965 10s (win £46,115 10s, place £55,850) was handled against £82,693 on the corresponding day last year, an Increase of £19,272 10s. The Grand National Steeplechase will always be remembered as providing a rare stable triumph. Anglo-French and Noko, owned by the Messrs Hazlett, and bracketed on the machine, filling first and second places. The race, although interesting and spectacular, was marred by Anini breaking down with half the journey covered, by Hyderabad falling a little further on, and by Erination falling five furlongs from home when holding a clear lead from Anglo-French. Erination assumed control at the end of seven furlongs, and carried on in front for a complete circuit from that stage. He was about three lengths in front of AngloFrench going to the second sod wall, which he misjudged, and fell heavily on his head. This left Anglo-French in charge from Noko and Dozie Boy, with Gay Boa and Chat the only others in the picture. Anglo-French- jumped the last fence well clear of Dozie Boy, and went on to win by a wide margin. Noko appeared to be well beaten by Dozie Boy at the last fence, but the latter tired badly and Noko got up to beat him by a neck. Gay Boa was about three lengths back, a long way In front of Chat and Valens, who just struggled home. Benevolent broke down before the kennels double the last time and Auctor refused at the same fence, while Abbey Lu was pulled up after jumping the double. All three were hopelessly out of the contest at the time. Erination broke his back and was destroyed. Messrs Hazlett won the race two years ago with Astral Flame, and R. Beale, who rode Anglo-French, was successful on Royal Limond in 1936. Beale secured the ride on Saturday’s winner only a few days before the event. He rode an excellent race, and saved his mount every possible inch of ground. Both horse and rider received an ovation returning to scale, and a good deal of this was also directed to Noko, who put up a heroic fight under his big weight on a holding The Winter Cup was won in a brilliant manner by Bashful Lady, who thus repeated her last year’s success in the event. She was never further away than third, and followed Foxbrae and Paladeo round the home turn and Into the straight, with Lenardo, Donnybrook Fair, Fairy Bard, and Boloyna all handy. The two leaders did not last long in the run home, and Bashful Lady was in from , a furlong from the post. Donnybrook Fair threw out a determined challenge and finished straight under hard pressure, but he had no chance of getting to Bashful Lady, who won with something in reserve. Boloyna finished solidly to cut out Lenardo for third place. Fairy Bard, Kevin, Dark Olga, and Fiddlers Green were next with Town Survey a long way back in last place. The start was he'd U P mostly by Foxbrae from No. 1, and he was first out, while Dark Olga and Sing Sing both took the tape with them, and lost a lot of ground. , Foxhaven was responsible for the day s big surprise by winning the Paparua Handicap after a stubborn finish with three other horses. Burberry and Fur Coat were the leaders to the straight entrance, but as soon as the run home was entered upon. Poutatau had a clear lead from Burberry, Sham Boy, Symbol, Royal Flight, and Foxhaven, all in a bunch. Symbol and then Foxhaven drew up to Poutatau nearing the post, and when these were fighting for the lead, Platform came from a long way. back • to join- in an exciting tussle. Foxhaven finished on the best to win from Platform, who got up rjght on the post to beat Poutatau, with Symbol a neck away. There was then a gap to Black Robe, with Invulnerable at the head of the strung-out remainder. This Was FOXhaven’s first race for some months and his game finish indicated that he is a much Improved gelding. Although he had done some good track work, he was in. little demand, and paid nearly threequarters of a century for a win. Platform was slow away and was not seen until the closing stages. His finishing run was one of the day’s features. The second choice, Prudentia, was slow early and was never in a likely position. .The finish of the Sydenham Hurdles was confined to the two outsiders of the field, Nightcalm and Rockery. After Black Musk had acted as pacemaker for more than a mile, Rockery drew to the front and held a useful lead entering the straight from Nightcalm, Black Musk. Colibrl, and Khurja, all running In close order. Rockery was clear over the last fence from Nightcalm, and appeared likely to carry on for a comfortable win, but Nightcalm crept up on the inside of him, and before (he rider of Rockery realised the danger, Nightcalm had drawn level, The pair then engaged in a strenuous struggle, Nightcalm gaining a narrow verdict. Black Musk was a fair third, three lengths in front of Talenta, who did not race up to expectations, Khurja fell at the. last fence but was not likely to have been dangerous at the finish. TURF GOSiSIP

Grand National Meeting Acceptances for all events on the second day close at 5 p.m. to-morrow. — 6 Rehandicap Nightcalm has been rehandicapped from 9-1 to 9-8 in the Grand National Hurdles. A Mixed Display True Range was sent out first choice for the Enfield Steeplechase on Saturday, but he won only after having several narrow escapes from falling. He gave a very mixed display and lost ground at practically every fence. His pace, however, stood to him in the last half-mile, as he ran to the front three furlongs from home, and jumping the last two fences well, he carried on for a very easy win. Safelight, who with Donadea had been responsible for the pace from the outset, was in second place over the last fence, but struck heavily, and his rider was unable to keep his seat, while Donadea had evaded the previous fence when on terms with Safelight. La Boca finished on into second place, well clear of the outsider, Wexford Bridge, who similarly beat Hanover, The last-named went well for a mile only, when he began to feel the effects of the unfavourable going. Mybel and Bow Street both fell at the stand double, with a round to go, the former going well at the time. Big Top Makes Good In Chancery was sent out first choice in a widelv-distributed pool in the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton on Saturday, but although prominent amongst the leading bunch throughout, she was never actually likely. The Chokebore representative Desert Strife was the first to enter the run home, and appeared to be in for a win until Big Top emerged from the ruck, and reeling off a telling run. wore down the leader to beat her decisively. Paper Lily, always prominent on the outside of the leaders, held on for third money from Royal Review, who was followed by Salary, Great Legend, and Prize Ring. The winner was bred by D. P. Wilson, and is now trained at Riccarton. He pointed to his prospects in this race by a creditable secopd placing at Washdvke after being a long way back turning for home. Desert Strife is one of the Chokebore team, and her race suggested an earlv success for her. Paper Lily, a relation of Passaform and Platform, was purchased as a two-year-old last year by I Mr A. Lcuisson, who had her breeding

value In view. Prize Ring Is a threequarter brother to Big Tori, and is raced by his breeder. Trial Hurdles Midgard led fos the major portion of the journey in the Trial Hurdles on Saturday, and did not surrender his place until approaching the last fence. Treasurer, who had been his nearest attendant up to this stage, also dropped out. Borak was then left in charge, but was joined by Moderate at the last fence, and the pair took It abreast. Moderate soon drew away and although Borak ran him to a length, Moderate was actually never in danger. Knight Commander ran Into third place after the last fence and easily accounted for Midgard, with further gaps to Treasurer and Heidelberg. Both the winner and runner-up are trained at Awapuni, and both struck tracks to their liking. Treasurer ran a very good race and jumped with confidence, but was a very tired horse at the last fence. Heidelberg failed to act in the going. The only casualty was Synthetic, who crashed at the nine furlong fence, when well up. Foxleap’s Brilliancy There were only two withdrawals from the Avonhead Hack Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, and the cumbersome field of 28 went to the post. Investors showed the right Judgment in making the Chokebore filly Foxleap first choice, as after Great March appeared to be the winner a few chains from the post, she put In a brilliant finishing run and beat him going away. Tring came with a belated effort to gain third money from the Awapuni visitor Park Light, who had been one of the leading division throughout. Sovereign Lad, Hunting Charm, Chiding, and Kilcato followed. Veteran’s Fatal Mistake The fall of Erination when holding a commanding lead about five furlongs from home in the Grand National Steeplechase caused a wave of disappointment amongst the big crowd at Saturday's races, and when it was learnt 1 later that he had broken his back and had to be destroyed there was a general feeling of regret at the unfortunate ending to an outstanding career. He had competed over all of the stillest steeplechase courses in New Zealand, and it was only on rare occasions that he made any mistake in his jumping, his fatal fall being the first since being acquired by Mr A. Syme in 1940. Erination, who was in his fourteenth year, was not raced until he was six years old, and he opened his account by winning three hurdle races in the Auckland district. Since then he had competed in all of the big hurdle races and steeplechases between Ellerslie and Riverton, and his victories included the Great Northern Hurdles, Wellington Steeplechase, Lincoln Steeplechase, and Riverton Steeplechase, while he acted as a minor place-getter under big weights in several other races. On the occasion of winning the Lincoln Steeplechase he had, three races previously, run fourth in the Sydenham Hurdles. In all Erination contested the Great Northern Hurdles four times for a win and a third; Great Northern Steeplechase once; Grand National Steeplechase, five times for a second and a fourth; Grand National Hurdles, four times, and the Wellington Steeplechase twice for a win. Altogether he had 104 starts for 14 wins and 24 minor placings for more than £6OOO in stakes. It was the intention of Mr Syme to retire Erination at the end of last jumping season, but the veteran Indicated by his second placing in the Lincoln Steeplechase that he was far from being at the end of. his tether, and Mr Syme, rather than turn the horse out, kept him in light exercise in a good home during the off season. Erination came back into work looking better than for many seasons past, and although he had failed in his earlier efforts, there is no doubt that he would have gained some of the prize money in Saturday’s race. He might not have held off Anglo-French, but he would have marie the winner’s task very much more difficult than was the case. His jumping up ■ to the time of the mishap, caused by getI tin{C‘in too close to the second sod wall, probably through slipping, had been fault-

less, and even if he had completed the course without winning, he was assured of a great reception. Erination was to have been definitely retired after this meeting. Out of Action Benevolent pulled up in a lame condition in the last round of the Grand National Steeplechase. The extent of the trouble will not be known for a few days, but it is likely that he will not be raced again for some time, peath of Promising Mare Socks, a five-year-old mare by Paper Money, met with fatal injuries at Sockburn on Friday afternoon. She became frightened at a passing aeroplane, and getting away from her attendant, collided with a post. She was severely cut about and had to be destroyed. Socks was owned by J. R. Cochrane, trainer of Bashful Lady, and won a race at Waimate last season. Heroic’s Owner Dead The death occurred in Melbourne recently of Mr C. B. Kellow, who paid 16,000 guineas for Heroic, when a three-year-old, It was a record price, but he landed a huge stake when Heroic won the Newmarket Handicap and Pilliewinkie the Australian Cup, Mr Kellow bred Hall Mark, by Heroic, and won the Melbourne Cup. the A.J.C. Derby, the Victorian Derby, and the Doncaster Handicap. He also bred Nuffield, by Heroic, and won the A.J.C. and Victoria Derbies, and the Caulfield Guineas. Heroic also sired many other good winners and topped the list of winning sires for seven seasons. Sympathy of Rough Riders l The sympathy of members of the 3rd Contingent (Rough Riders), veterans of the Boer War, was expressed at the annual reunion on Saturday evening to Mr A. Syme in the loss of his fine Jumper Erination, who had to be destroyed after racing in the Grand National Steeplechase. Considerable interest Is being taken in the Annual Grand National Bloodstock Sale, which will this year be held at Mr J. S. Shaw’s stables, on Friday next, at 2.30 p.m. The entry of 40 brood mates, racehorses, and untried stock, includer Mr John Porter’s entire stud and a number of Stonyhurst two and three-year-olds; also the stallions MARTARMA and MISHNA. — 1 BAD LEG? TROTTING NOTES

Metropolitan T.C. Nominations for all events, including the Metropolitan Malden Race, at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’* meetings on August 21 and 28, will close on Tuesday next, 10th Instant, at 5 p.m. —4 At Aurlrlanil The field for the August' Handicap, 3min 26sec class, at the Auckland Trotting’s Club’s meeting on Saturday, Is comprised almost entirely of horses that have been trained in Canterbury stables but are now quartered in Auckland. The number includes April Direct, Black Label, Channel Fleet, Isabella Pointer, Phllarlo, Shadow Son, Betty Boop, and Worthy Need, A Cup Prospect The Rlngtrue horse Parshall, who I* expected to race at Addington later in the month. Is engaged In the Takanlnl Handicap, 2min 48sec class, at the Auckland meeting next Saturday. Handicapped on 12 yards behind in a field that does not represent the very best class, Parshall appears to have excellent prospects. He has a very big reputation. Small Acceptances The acceptances received for the Drake! Handicap and Royal Oak Handicap at Auckland are disappointing, for only nine have been paid up for in the former race and eight in the Royal Oak Handicap. Two mile trotters, apparently, are not numerous in the north, for the Royal Oak Handicap is only 4min Slsec class, the back-marker, Paul Parrish, on 43 yards. Sandiways Sandiways, a five-year-old by Sandydale from Eugenia, is now trained at Epsom and will be racing at Auckland next Saturday. When trained by R. B. Berry, Sandiways showed the greatest promise, nad as a two-year-old in 1941 he won the Juvenile Handicap at Addington. At that time he looked a type that would be well served with age. Dunedin Soldiers’ Banquet.—Souveniring, as it is termed., had no place In the big reception by the Dunedin Returned Services' Association to 500 returned servicemen of the present war. in marked contrast to the report of the Christchurch banquet. Tne only casualty was one broken glass. At the civic banquet in Christchurch 315 pieces of cutlery. 35 dozen bottles of soft drink, and 83 glasses went missing from the hall.—(P.A.)
