CURRENT NOTES Mrs James Pow, who was asked to stand as an independent candidate for the Wellington Central Electorate in the coming elections, has decided that she is unable to do so as a strenuous electioneering campaign would make it necessary for her to give up her war work, which she wished to carry on. After many years’ absence in Sydney, Miss Violet Roche, who recently arrived at Auckland, will take up her new duties as New Zealand secretary to Dr. Barnardo’s Homes in Wellington to-day. At the Welcome Club on Saturday afternoon, the Master Butchers’ War Effort Committee entertained at afternoon tea and tea nearly 400 members of the armed forces, and after the dance that followed, supper was served by a group of Lyttelton women, directed by Mrs J. S, Stanley. Yesterday members of the Kaneke Club provided afternoon tea, tea, and supper for about 450 men, for whom a concert programme was arranged by Miss Betty Carnochan. About 130 men of the services were the guests of the Combined Churches of Christ at tea and supper at the Y.W.C.A. rooms yesterday. Mrs J. S. Boughen was in charge of the arrangements, and Mr Jack Boughen was in charge of the concert programme. At the Welcome Club on Saturday, Mr Welsford, for the Master Butchers’ War Effort Committee, officially handed over to the club the committee’s gift—a cool room, which is proving a boon to the Welcome Club. The Mayor, Mr E. H. Andrews, on behalf of the Patriotic Council, accepted the gift and thanked the Master Butchers’ War Effort Committee for the great help it had given to patriotic work. The lady editor of "The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of packets of used stamps from "a family of six.” At the August meeting of the Hospital Lady Visitors’ Association, at which Miss E. Cardale presided, Mrs A. G. Kemp, for the association’s sewing party, said that many garments had been made during the month. Mrs S. H. Stewart reported that the Nurse rest cottage at Sumner and its garden were in good order. Six patients had been granted one week each at the Rhodes Convalescent Home. Books and magazines for the Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals had been gratefully received from Mrs Langford Symes, Miss Norris, Mrs A. I. Rattray, Mrs Firth, Mrs Walker, Mrs James, Miss E. M. Crosbie, and an anonymous friend. In the annual festival of one-act plays held in Dunedin under the auspices of the Otago branch of the British Drama League, the Drama League cup, for the best play in the A grade, was won by the Onslow players, a group that had not competed in previous festivals. They presented “A Privy Council,” a comedy of the days of Samuel Pepys. The W.E.A. group for its presentation of Eugene O’Neill’s drama, "All God’s Chillun," was placed second. In the B grade, the repertory drama class wa first with “Sordid Story," and the Green Island Women’s Institute second with “The Life and Soul of the Party.” A trophy for the best comedy at the festival was won by the St, Clair Players, who presented “Joint Owners in Spain,” In the section for original plays, first award went to “Belindas Blunder,” a comr presented by the Belmont Players. Mrs Nela Neale, of Christchurch was judge. A play-writ-ing competition for a cup presented by Lady Ferguson was held in connexion with the festival. Miss Lilian McCarthy, “Ta-Ra-Ra Bicycle.” and Mrs F. G. Soper, “Icarus,” were placed firit equal, with Mr F J Roberts, of Alexandra. “Monument to Glory” third, and Mrs J. Sutherland Ross “Evacuees,” fourth. Miss Marjorie Bassett, < Christchurch, judged this competition. SOLDIERS PARCELS.
