REVIEW OF WOMEN IN FORCES

* WASTE OF MANPOWER ALLEGED tP.A.) WELLINGTON, August 7. An appeal to the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) that steps be taken immediately to review both the numbers and the occupations of women in the forces had been made by the council of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. In doing so, the council expressed the feeling that there was a wastage of manpower. While the review and combing out were being arranged, further enlistments should cease. While, perhaps, few women had been taken from productive industries for the forces, they had been drawn from the general pool of labour which would otherwise have been available for industry. The New Zealand Federation of Labour passed a resolution on the same subject, viewing with concern the grave shortage of female workers in secondary industries and also asking the Government for an investigation into the utilisation of women in the forces.
