MANPOWER APPEAL COMMITTEE

CASES HEARD YESTERDAY Claiming that he had been victimised by the Railway Department, Ja m fs Robert Cleghorn, a shunter, appealed at the Manpower Industrial Appeal Committee yesterday against the decision of the Manpower Officer reinstating him m his employment without payment for Ume tost as a consequence of suspension for senous misconduct. Cleghorn said he had refused to work on an engine for four consecutive Sundays as second man when he was in charge during the week, and had been suspended He had later been reinstated and had been told by the district traffic manager that he was to be transferred from the Lyttelton yard 3 to Christchurch as a punishment, and had been given six weeks to find a house^ The Manpower Officer (Mr M. R° 33 ( said that Cleghhorn should wait till the end of six weeks, and if by then he had not found a house that wag the time to appeal. Cleghorn said he wanted to terminate his employment with the DepartniThe chairman (Mr K. G. Archer) said that the committee could not act as a Court of Appeal in a case concerning the transfer of an employee. Mr R. Gallagher, representing the Railway Department,, gave evidence and said he failed to see that the department bad victimised Cleghorn. who. he said, had given a great deal ol trouble to the department and had unsettled the other men The appeal was dismissed. George PercivaJ David Smith, a diemaker, appealed against the decision of tlie Manpower Officer refusing him permission to terminate his employment with, the Christchurch Tramway Board, but his appeal was dismissed Margaret Evans, a shop assistant, appealed against her direction by the Manpower Officer to employment with Beath and Company, Ltd., as a waitress, because of an injury to a wrist she received some years ago, and which still gave her trouble. She said she could pot carry or lift weights, though the finding of a medical board which had examined her previously had said tjnat she wag fit to do the work of a wailress. “I think you should give the work a trial," said the chairman, "tor no doubt If you drop a few trays you'll soon find yourself released, but we are bound to follow the decision ol the medical board and so advise you to give the work a go." Other decisions were given as follows: George Edward Dearman. against the decision of the Manpower Officer to employment w th the'Kaiapoi Woollen Manufacturing Company. Ltd. appeal withdrawn; the Christchurch Fire Board agattist the decision of the Manpower Officer refusing it permission to terminate the employment of Trevor William Shaw, adjourned till next sitting; Isobel Stokell, against the decision of tlie Manpower Officer refusing Gordon Redvers Stokelj permission to terminate his employment with H. Piesse, Ltd., appeal granted.
