PROMOTION OF EMPLOYMENT
REDUCED EXPENDITURE Payments by the Employment Division of the National Service Department under various employment promotion schemes in the year ended March 31. 1943. totalled £374,179, compared with £1,385,594 in the preceding year. Even so, this represented an overspending of the amount provided in the estimates by £111,679. These figures are given in the annual report of the National Service Department Although every endeavour was made to transfer to unsubsidised employment every man physically capable of performing useful work, it was found impracticable to reduce the numbers of men employed under the schemes to such an extent as to enable the expenditure to be kept within the limits of'the amount appropriated. Detailed figures for expenditure on the schemes, with the corresponding figures for last year in parenthesis, are as follows:—Scheme 4E, £19.441 (£158,206): scheme 4F. £985 (£8863); scheme 13. £329*,509 (£1,095,770); scheme 16. £637 (£4422); scheme 16A, £485 (£606); insurance of workers, £2lB (£657); transport of workers, £B3l (£1042): youths’ farm settlement, £384 (£345); rural housing bonus, £3438 (£15,376); assistance to flax industry. £4052 ( ); miscellaneous, £1699 (£3145); administration expenses, £12.500 (£97,162). Expenditure on Education The total expenditure on education in New Zealand last year, excluding revenue from reserves vested in postprimary schools and university colleges, was £5,038.395.
