The annual report of the Department of Education says that the loss of these men has thrown a heavy strain on New Zealand schools, and any further loss would have a serious effect upon the work. Only a few small schools have had to be closed; but much difficulty has been encountered ip keeping some positions filled. Many married women have re-entered the teaching profession, and retirements 4m superannuation are not permitted without special approval.
