TURF GOSSIP Grand National Meeting T Entries for the New Zealand Grand 1 National Steeplechase, Sydenham Hurdles, and Winter Cup (first day), Lincoln Steeplechase and New Zealand Grand National Hurdles (second day), close to-morrow, at 5 p.m. 6 Stud Dispersal Mr John Porter, of Akaroa, has decided to dispose of his entire stud, because of a shortage of labour. The stud Includes two imported mares, Saone and Miss Inchmahone, and Taraheke, dam of Matara and Kevin. Young Sire Sold The English horse Parchment has been sold on behalf of Mr T. H. Coltman, of Wellington, to Mr E. B. Rawlings, of Knocklynn. Parchment was responsible for some good performances when trained at Rlccarton, including a success in the Waikoualti Cup. Trial as Hurdler The former Rlccarton gelding Willow Wood is a recent recruit to the jumping ranks at Ellerslie. Since being purchased last year by Mr J. D. Simpson after his surprise win at Rlccarton, Willow Wood, although showing occasional signs of form on the flat, has been very disappointing. Names Claimed In a recent list of names claimed arc the following:—Battle Royal, by Battle Song from Princess Doreen; Irish Pal, by Mans Pal from Irish Fling; Trailing Home, by Friday Night from Virginia Reel: Buddy, by Man’s Pal from Pink Abbey; Nigger Lad, by Siegfried from Spearmaid, and Queen’s Slipper, by Paper Slipper from Corn Queen. Valkyrian Dead The ■ death has occurred of the Eng-lish-bred stallion Valkyrian, who had been located in South Canterbury for several years. He was foaled in 1917, and was Imported to New Zealand by Dr. W. C. Ring, Auckland, in 1922. Valkyrian was by William the Third, the best staying son of St. Simon, from Valkyr, by Eager, son of Enthusiast, from St. Natalia, half-sister to the Oaks winner La Sagesse, .by Common from St. Mary, by Hermit. Valkyrian sired many useful horses, both flat performers and jumpers. Among them were Valpeen, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase twice, the Great Northern Steep echase twice, and the Wellington Steefilechase; Slayer, Prince of Orange, Strip. Valarth, Val Watch. Lord Val; and good performers by him on the flat were Sleeveless, Norseman, Shy. Prince Val. and Vail. Valkyrian s most notable contribution to racing history should be Valadore, who is the dam of Kindergarten. TROTTING NOTES Deaths of Horses The deaths of the following horses have been reported to the New Zealand Trotting Association: —Cushla Machree, Ben Direct, Erin’s Logan, Petite Jewel. Tan John, and Taruna. Transferred to Auckland The three-year-old trotter, Black Monarch. by Lucky Jack (twice winner, of the New Zealand Trotting Cup and numerous big handicaps), from Rose Laurel, has been purchased by a Mangere sportsman. Although he has had very litOe racing experience. Black Monarch, who was educated by R. B. Berry, revealed a good deal of promise in his training. - Will Cary , Will Cary, who was recommended by Mr F. J. Beer, stipendiary steward, at the meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association yesterday for a place on the schooling list, is a five-year-old trotter by Quite Sure from Carbines, and is owned by Mr W. Norman, at one time a starter on Canterbury racecourses. As a four-year-old Will Cary won three races in six starts, and this season his record is three starts for one win and two unplaced performances. Will Cary has behaved badly in his last two races, but the waywardness he has shown in his last two starts can be overcome he may prove to be one of the best trotters in New Zealand. CONTROL OF TROTTING MEETING OF BOARD “Will Cary has qualified for the schooling list," said Mr F. J. Beer, stipendiary steward, in his report to the meetin/ of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association yesterday. Mr H. W. Kltchingham (president). Such a bald statement is not sufficient to Justify the board in placing thehorseon the schooling list. Even the fact that it had refused to leave the mark twice at Forbury Park is not in itself sufficient for the board to take extreme action. It was decided after a short discussion to ask the stipendiary steward to furnish a full report on the horses behav--IClffienAuckland Trotting Club submitted for approval its programme for the proposed meeting on August 28. The secretary to the board (Mr W. H. Larcombe) drew the attention of the board to the fact that though the club Intended to have eight races on which the totallsator would be open, the club intended to run another race—a Trial Handicap, of £2OO, 3mln ssec class, one mile and a quarteron which the totallsator would not be The idea was to give , owners of maiden horses a chance to win a stake and in the same move allow horses to quality for a higher class.
