TORPEDOED TANKER BROUGHT TO PORT
(8.0. W.) RUGBY, June 13. The British Ambassador to the united States fLord Halifax) has sent to the personnel of a British tanker a message of appreciation of their outstanding service in saving the ship, which, after being torpedoed, sailed 20 days in convoy in a seriously damaged condition, and safely made a West Indies port. , The vessel was torpedoed 300 miles from the Azores. Immediately after the explosion the chief engineer rushed into the engineroom. Not knowing whether the ship would break up at any moment, he worked up to his neck in water, plugging the straining and holed bulkheads with wood and canvas. Although (he ship was badly holed and her machinery so smashed that it was impossible to manoeuvre astern, the master determined to continue the voyage to a port where sufficient fuel could be obtained to take the ship further on for repairs.
