THIRD LIBERTY LOAN

SUBSCRIPTIONS FOR FIRST WEEK , , ■ MORE THAN £7,000,000 RAISED t (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June-13. ; L. The first week of the Liberty LoanV, campaign has produced results show? 4 ing that the £35,000,000 objective is a real stimulus to an extra effort by the public. It was announced by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) to-night that subscriptiofts up till Saturday totalled £7,398,465, and . there were 5179 applications, 84 per cent, of which were for less than £SOO, and 16 per cent, for more than that sum. “In the first week there were nearljr three times as many applications," stated Mr Nash, “and more than twice as much money as for the two previous loans. The money comes from all places. Auckland raised £1,500,000; Wellington is in second place, with £ Dunedin, £350.000; Christchurch. £262,000; Invercargill. £236,000; New Plymouth. £153,000; Palmerston North, £121.000; Napier, £116,000; and Nelson, Hamilton, Timaru, Gisborne, Thames, Blenheim, Greymouth, Oamaru, and Westport, all in order. The spirit prevailing right throughout the whole of the Dominion is magnificent. The implications are that we shall get our money, but we cannot get too much. Question of Taxation "The fact that there is no extra taxation, if subscriptions come up to requirements, has impressed everyone with the necessities of our country and the wisdom and advisability of everyone putting in all they can.” Mr Nash commended what he called the extraordinarily enterprising proposal of the Public Service Investment Society,, “which has agreed to lend any member of the Public Service the full amount they desire to subscribe. Those who require a safe place for their bonds or scrip can, he said, take it ™ the Post Office and the officials will give a receipt for the safe custody. The trading banks do this for their customers, and are thinking of the possibility of doing it for all who subscribe. , Mr Nash said that 458,000 subscribers were secured to the last Australian war loan. 185,000 coming from New South Wales and 153.000 from Victoria. "I wonder,” he added, “if New Zealand could do better than those two places put together.” The first public duty of the Hon. W. Perry. Minister of the Armed Forces and War Co-ordination, has been to endorse the appeal made by his colleagues in the War Cabinet for the Third Liberty Loan. ‘T am proua. stated Mr Perry to-night, “as a somier of the Great War. to have been calico into the War Cabinet, though not oi mv own seeking, to serve ns best i can the land of my birth. I appreciate the magnitude of my task when I realise that I follow in this high office my friend, Gordon Coates, himseit much more distinguished as a soioier than I. A man big in stature and bigger still in intellect and breadth or vision, who in war and P pac P; his country and Empire so failniuny. He urged New Zealanders on nc home front in the great battle to an their part in winning, where t ' weapons are their savings.
