HURUNUI SEAT

NATIONAL PARTY’S CHOICE NOMINATIONS CALLED FOR CANDIDATE Nominations for a candidate to contest the Hurunui electorate in the interests of the National Party at the General Election are now being called and will close on July 7. The Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, who has held the seat since 1908, is not seeking re-election. So far no nominations have been received, but names that have been mentioned as likely to be placed before the electorate committee are those of Mr M. E. Lyons, who was the National Party candidate in the Christchurch East by-election, Mr C. N. Mackenzie, of Motunau, who is a son-in-law of Mr Forbes, and the Mayor of Rangiora (Mr C. W. Tyler). Mr Mackenzie is a nephew of Major Sir Clutha Mackenzie, a former M.P., and a grandson of a former Prime Minister, Sir Thomas Mackenzie. One National Party nomination in 1941, when a General Election seemed probable, was that of Mr A. Cowie, of Hawarden. It is reported, however, that he does not intend to enter the field at this election. No indication has been given of he Labour Party’s choice of a candidate to contest the seat, but opinion in the district is that Mr H. E. Denton, of Christchurch, and a member of the City Council, will come forward again. At the 1938 General Election Mr Denton polled 5144 votes and was only 535 votes behind Mr Forbes. The Labour Party Conference at Easter is reported to have decided not to call for fresh nominations in cases where candidates had already been selected, and as Mr Denton’s name had been announced previously it is likely that he will be standing again. The Kaiapoi electorate committee of the National Party has extended the closing date for the nomination of candidates for the seat to July 15 for constitutional reasons. Previously it had been announced that nominations would close on June 14. So far Mr G. C. Warren, of Darfield, Mr W. H. Overton, of Sandy Knolls, and Mr R. G. Brown, of Christchurch, have been nominated, OTHER NOMINATIONS (PA.) WELLINGTON, June 12. The Democratic Soldier Labour Party has selected as candidates Pricate C. S. Teece for Wellington South, and Mr Les Frame for Wellington Suburbs. Both are business men and Private Teece, who is in camp, is well known in sporting circles. Mr Frame, who resigned from the Labour Party to become the Democratic Soldier Labour Party’s first president in Dunedin, now lives in the Wellington Suburbs elecl torate. Mr J. Hodgens, sitting member for Palmerston North, has been unanimously nominated by all Labour Representation Council affiliations for that seat.
