A large basket of colourful flowers and berries was taken by Mr M. J. Barnett to a meeting of - the garden circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club on Friday, to illustrate his talk on flowers and berries to be grown during the winter. The president, Mrs A. E. G. Lyttle, thanked Mr Barnett for his continued helpfulness to the circle. A successful bridge and mah-jongg party was held at the National Club rooms on Saturday afternoon by the local branch of the Overseas League in aid of the Free Hospitality Fund of tl.j league’s headquarters in London. Prizes, given by Mesdames Sholto Douglas, Royce Soanes, Misses E. Aitken and Rose Reynolds, were won by Mrs G. B. Morgan (contract bridge), Miss M. McCrostie (auction bridge), Mrs C. Taylor (mah-jongg). and Mrs Douglas (lucky number). Miss E. Ait-> ken, vice-president of the branch, presented the prizes, and thanked all who had supported the partv by their presence and by sending donations. Members of the , Women’s Citizens’ Association entertained about 500 servicemen at afternoon tea, tea, and supper at the Welcome Club on Saturday. Yesterday, there was again a very large, gathering of soldiers, sailors, and airmen at the club. Afternoon tea, tea, and supper were supplied by the Herbert Shoe Company, Ltd., and the concert programme was provided by the Christchurch branch of the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association. The Mayoress. Miss E. Couzins. acknowledges with thanks a second donation from the Townswomen s Guild for her soldiers’ tobacco fund. The Mayor, Mr E. H. Andrews, and Miss Couzins visited Burwood Hospital on Friday and distributed gifts of cigarettes and tobacco to the returned servicemen who are patients there. Mr and Mrs A. D. McConnel, Harewood have received advice that their second son, Lieutenant Kenneth D. C. McConnel. was married to Senior Probationer Nurse Nola Welch, of the South African Military Nursing Staff, at Durban recently. Miss Welch is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. J. Welch, Maitland, South Africa. Lieutenant McConnel left New Zealand in August, 1940, to train for the Fleet Air Arm. The marriage of Brigadier K, MacCormick. previously Director of Meaical Services, to Miss Joan Stewart Jenwick N.Z W.A.A.C., is announced by the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Official News Service. The bride, who is a daughter of the late Dr Eardley Fenwick and of Mrs Fenwick, Wellington, and granddaughter of the late Sir George Fenwick and of Lady Fenwick, Dunedin, served, until recently, aboard a hospital ship. Lieutenant-General Sir Bernard Freyberg escorted the bride. The Rev. H. Squires, of the hospital ship on which she served, performed the ceremony, and members ox the staff of the ship were present at the wedding. The death occurred in Auckland recently of Mrs H. Pickett, widow of Mr H. Pickett, and daughter of the late Joseph Mandl. Hokitika. Mrs Pickett leaves one daughter, Mrs J. Huddleston, whose husband has been overseas since the beginning of the war, also two sisters, Miss Rachel Mandl. of Auckland, and Mrs Coltman, sen., of Wellington. SOLDIERS’ PARCELS. Call HEREFORD COURT (or by letter). —6 VICTORIA LEAGUE CANTERBURY BRANCH At the last monthly meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Victoria League, Mrs J. Mowbray Tripp (president) presided. Votes of thanks were passed to Mesdames W. S. Bean, Kenneth Ballantyne, and H. S. Williams for help given at the Welcome Club when the leagqe entertained servicemen. It was reported that many letters had been received from England, thanking the league for gifts of baby clothes, that Mrs R. H. Hennah, who distributes books and magazines for the league, was in urgent need of supplies of literature to send to camps and to lonely outposts, and that wool would be distributed to knitters at the league’s office, 66 Cathedral square, every Friday from 10.30 a.m. till 3 p.m. Parcels of woollen comforts had been sent by the league’s knitting circle to the head office in London and to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. A sub-committee, comprising Mrs Tripp, Mrs Bean, Lady Ciark-Hall, Mrs D. P. Dickinson, and Mr H. S. Vestey was set up to arrange for the sending of foodstuffs to the King George and Queen Elizabeth Victoria League Club in London. It was reported that, since May, the league’s American Relations Bureau had arranged hospitality for 38 men, had provided entertainment for many. others, and had given help in various ways to men discharged from hospitals. THE P.E.N. JESSIE MACKAY MEMORIAL AWARD It was announced at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Centre of the P.E.N., held recently, that nearly 100 entries had been received for the Jessie Mackay Memorial competition for poetry, 1942. The judge, Mr Alan Mulgan, has awarded the prize to Mr R. I. F. Pa-ttison, Remuera, Auckland, for his poem, ‘‘Youth Passes.” The following have been specially commended: Mrs Elsie M. Ryan (Wadestown) and Misses L. F. Smaill (Dunedin), Mary Stanley (Hamilton), and Mary R. Greig (Wanganui). The annual election of officers for the P.E.N. resulted as follows; President, Lieutenant-Colonel C. A, L. Treadwell, 0.8. E.; vice-presidents, Sir James Elliott, Dr. G. H. Taylor; secretary, Mr Lawlor; treasurer, Mr George Joseph; auditor, Mr Perry.PLUNKET SOCIETY AT NEW BRIGHTON ANNUAL MEETING HELD Although the committee’s efforts had to be curtailed, the annual report of the New Brighton sub-branch of the Plunket Society, presented at the annual meeting, showed that the activities of the branch had been successfully maintained during the last year, and that the finances were in a satisfactory state. Thirty new subscribers had joined during the year. A large increase in the work was reported by the Plunket nurse. 3930 cases having been attended to at the rooms. A total of 265 cases had been visited at the homes. A credit balance of £4l 11s 8d was reported. , , The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs F.
