THE TUNNEL ROAD SCHEME
Sirl was surprised to hear the remarks of Messrs W. S. Mac Gibbon and F. W. Freeman at this week.s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour.Board. The tunnel road scheme in the past has always been advocated as an Access to the Sea” proposition to improve our shipping facilities. Now, these gentlemen tell us that it has nothing to do with any alteration to the port, but stress its value for the development of property on the other side of the harbour. Do they expect the people of Christchurch to contribute the large sum of money required to construct a tunnel road for this purpose? I would be very grateful if anyone could inform me how they propose to handle motor traffic at the Lyttelton end of the proposed tunnel in existing circumstances. I am inclined to think there is more in this sudden change of ideas than meets the eye and I don t think the public will fall for it.-Yours^etc, June 4, 1943. IMr W. S. Mac Gibbon, to whom the letter was referred, -aid that because of the coming conference neither Mr Freeman nor he wished to comment.]
