HOME GUARD PARADES
MEN OVER MILITARY AGE EXEMPTION SUGGESTED (P.A.) WELLINGTON. June 10. A request that men over military age be exempted from further Home Guard week-end parades was contained in notice of a question by Mr H. Atmore (Independent, Nelson), on behalf of the Hon. W. E. Barnard (Napier), to the Minister of National Service (the Hon. A. McLagan), when the House met this afternoon. Mr Atmore said that many of the men concerned were returned soldiers of the last war, and had been attending Home Guard parades since the earliest days of the organisation. Complaints, he said, were general among these men of what was described as the useless waste of time involved in the existing parades—time, it was felt, which could be more profitably employed raising vegetables for home consumption. Furthermore, men over military age stated that they could not keep pace with the younger men, and as many of them were doing two men’s wprk during (he week, they were feeling the strain of compulsory attendance at week-end parades. In an emergency, of course, they would be immediately available.
