LIBERTY LOAN

“FULL AND PROMPT SUBSCRIPTION ” APPEAL BY LEADER OF OPPOSITION From Our Parliamentary Reporter (P a.) WELLINGTON, June 10. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland) has added the weight and influence of his position to the appeal for a full and prompt subscription to the third Liberty Loan. In a statement to-night he strongly.emphasised that the objective is above all party differences. . “The fact that I, being the leader of a political party opposed to. the ~°Y* ernment Party, have been invited to speak to the people of New Zealand on this subject is,” said Mr Holland, very significant. I wish to emphasise that whatever differences we may have politically, this is an occasion when those differences are gladly dropped, and I am happy indeed to have the privilege of joining hands with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance in making this appeal for the funds necessary for carrying on the war. There are no politics where war is concerned. War, and the financial needs of war, are far wider, far more vital than any political party, and just as we in the political arena are united in this appeal to our countrymen to contribute funds for victory, so I hope people in all walks of life, too, will unite in making this loan a gigantic SUCC6SS, “If I may use an apt analogy, I would say. that the structure of democracy and freedom is ablaze and threatened, and just as no one would argue as to what sort of fire engine should be used to put out a fire, so should we support this loan to finance a part of the United Nations’ brigade that will extinguish the fire that threatens civilisation. “We should show that our will to win,” continued Mr Holland, “is comparable with that of the fighting men. The loan is a challenge to all, and by filling it to overflowing we will give another demonstration of faith in the justice of our cause. By holding back the flood of money to-day behind the dam of national security we will have a reservoir in the future from which to draw for reconstruction.” To-day, said Mr Holland, was a significant anniversary, for three. years ago to-day, when we were being pressed back in France, our ally in the first war, Italy, came in against us. “I think it right and proper,” he concluded, "that occasionally we should cast our minds back to those fateful days of adversity, and live again our emotions and fears of that time, and while giving thanks for our deliverance from the disasters which threatened us then, let us remember we survived because our forces gave of their best, our workers gave of their best. Though we stood alone, we did not shrink from the task.” TOTAL OF £IIO,OOO IN CHRISTCHURCH PARADE OF UNITS OF ARMED FORCES Subscription to the Third Liberty War Loan in Christchurch yesterday totalled £20,430. For the three days since the appeal was launched the total received was £110,430. Some of the outstanding contributions received yesterday included;— £ Beath and Company, Ltd. .. 10,000 Riccarton Timber Company, Ltd 1,000 British Leathercraft, Ltd. .. 1,000 Quill, Morris (1936), Ltd. .. 1,000 Sydenham Money Club .. 1,000 George Bonnington, Ltd. .. 1,000 The receipts in National Savings bonds and National Savings accounts for the Christchurch metropolitan area, for the first three days of this week: totalled £2OOO, This money is not in-, eluded in the Liberty Loaa campaign. The part that New Zealand’s naval forces are playing in the war will be emphasised next week when “Speed Our Ships” will be the slogan for Navy Week. There will be subsequent weeks for the Army and for the Air Force. All three branches of the services are co-operating enthusiastically. A feature of the Navy Week display in Cathedral square will be a Japanese landing barge, which was captured in .the Pacific in an action in which New Zealand corvettes played a prominent part. The barge, which has only recently arrived in the Dominion, shows evidence of the rough handling it received in action. Naval guards will mount guard over displays, which will include torpedoes and other weapons of modern warfare. As Monday is United Nations Flag Day there will be a combined parade of Navy, Army, and Air Force units, and members of the St. John Ambulance Association, the Red Cross Society, and the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. Some of the latest types of Army equipment will be in the van of the procession. The Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) will visit Christchurch for the occasion. He will arrive from Wellington by special aeroplane, and will take the salute outside the Cathedral at 2.20 p.m. The parade will leave Latimer square at 2.15 p.m. Mr Nash will be supported by the District Commandant (Brigadier E. T. Rowllings). Mr Nash will speak in support of the local loan campaign at a meeting in the Civic Theatre on Monday evening. Skilled entertainers will be drawn from naval personnel for concerts that will be arranged in Cathedral square during the week. Together with Navy League helpers they will assist in the sale of bonds. The large model of H.M.S. Victory, which was made some years ago at the Addington Workshops, will also be on view.
