OAMARU J.C.

CUP WON BY KEVIN The Oamaru Jockey Club’s winter fixture was held on Saturday In fine mild weather, after stormy conditions overnight. The track was not affected by the rain, and the going was fast. There was a very large attendance, including full train loads of racegoers from Christchurch and Duhedin Speculation was spirited throughout, tne sum of £32,433 10s being handled as against £24,530 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7903. The turnover was easily a record for a galloping meeting on the present course. The Oamaru Cup attracted a very strong field, and the result of an interesting race was the same as at Ashburton, Kevin outstaying Dominate. On this occasion, however, Kevin showed more improver ment than his rival, and won decisively. After Bashful Lady had acted as pacemaker for two furlongs. King Gustavo took over, and he and Maggiore led into the straight from Kevin, Hotch Potch, Dominate, and Bashful Lady, with Strip showing up. The two leaders did not carry on very far. and Kevin soon opened up a break from Hotch Potch, Strip, and Dominate. The last-named made a bold effort to challenge, but although having a comfortable second placing, he had little chance of getting near Kevin. Strip outstayed Hotch Potch to beat her by a head for third money, with Bashful Lady and Palfrey leading the strung-out remainder, Kevin has made marked improvement in recent weeks, especially in not drifting as formerly early in his races, and he should earn further distinction at Wlngatui. Dominate had every opportunity to make good after a long list of failures, but was no match for the winner. The Grange Handicap was also won in a decisive manner, a staunch favourite in Grilse outclassing her opponents. She followed Bali and Winning Flight into the straight, and a furlong from home had drawn past them. Without being called upon, she still had a good margin to spare at the post from Rawhamai, who was always handy, and finished on solidly to beat Synthetic. The latter made a good showing after dwelling when the barrier went up. Night Pal was two lengths away in front of Cruden Bay and Winning Flight. ... A feature of the day's racing was the remarkable success of W. F. Ellis, who had mounts in the four races in which he was eligible to ride, and won all four. This brings his total wins for the season to 40, and as his rival, W. Broughton, was not riding in the North Island on Saturday, Ellis is now four wins in front for the Jockey premiership.
