N.Z.E.F. NEWSPAPER IN PACIFIC

FIRST ISSUE OF “KIWI”

“ ‘Kiwi’ has been established with some difficulty,” says the editorial article introducing the newspaper of the Pacific section of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. “Most of the fittings and furnishings of the printing and editorial offices had to be made from packing cases. Much of the machinery was damaged in transit; a large case of small type was smashed open, much of it lost, and the rest so thoroughly ‘pied’ that all hands, from the O.C. down, had to spend days of monotonous sorting.” However, the' first issue was a creditable one, well printed and made up. All hand set, it is small, but compresses a good deal of information into the available space. Overseas news in the first issue included all the important facts about the breaking of the Mareth Line, the Russian capture of Rzhev and Gzhatsk. and the Bismarck Sea battle. In addition, there was a general survey of the news and a commentary by Captain J. Rutherford, M.A., Ph.D.. in civilian life professor of history at Auckland .University College. New Zealand news is dealt with largely in the form of paragraphs, though a good space was found on the front page for the Scrimgeour appeal board hearing. There is not a great deal of news about the activities of units in the force. The leading article explains why this is so. “It becomes clear that the best use can be made of ‘Kiwi’ only if fairly full unit notes are included,’ says the article. “Since much of the material cannot be sent to New Zealand, it has been reluctantly decided that most issues will not be allowed through the post. Special numbers will be prepared occasionally for sending home.” . , , The newspaper is printed on a pr#ss supplied by the National Patriotic Fund Board, and is produced by the Army Education and Welfare Service.
