LEVEL CROSSING FATALITY

WOMAN KILLED AT l GREYMOUTH A level crossing tragedy occurred r at the Cowper street crossing, just north of the Greymouth Hospital, on 1 Saturday morning when Mrs Eileen ! Catherine Barson, aged about 30, of ■ Buccleugh street, Greymouth, was , killed. 1 When the Greymouth-Hokitika i mixed train, which leaves Greymouth 1 at' 7.35 a.m. was near the crossing at > the approach to the Karoro station, a ( railway employee noticed a woman 1 placing a bicycle against a telegraph . pole near the track. He took no further • notice until he heard the brakes ap- • plied to the train, which pulled up. ‘ The fireman of the train is understood : to have seen a person near the engine. I The train travelled only 25 yards be--1 fore pulling up. The body was recovered in a mutir lated condition and was not identified 1 for some hours. '■ The train was delayed for about half an hour and as a result of the disorganisation of schedules the express ’ was delayed for about 20 minutes. SOLDIER KILLED | ACCIDENTAL DISCHARGE OF RIFLE !
