NEW WHARF AT KAIKOURA
“That the new wharf be gradually dismantled as timber was required for county use," was the decision made at the monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council. Mr F. J. Monk, who presided, said that the inspection of the new wharf had shown that it contained wonderfully useful timber. What it would cost to pull it down would be difficult to estimate. The chairman considered that the timber could be used to get over their difficulties of supply of hardwoods for bridge work. He recommended that the timber from the wharf be lifted as required. Cr. H. J. H'ewson stated that the timber in the wharf was of good quality and that it had not deteriorated. It would prove a wonderful asset to the .county and he supported the dismantling as required. Cr. E. H. Workman said that if the wharf could be put to such good use it was no use leaving the timber until the sea either rotted it or washed it away. The same timber could not, he thought, be obtained anywhere else in New Zealand to-day. He was in favour of dismantling bay by bay. The motion was then put to the council and passed.
