Cold was used to destroy weevils in rice by the army authorities in Auckland when It was discovered recently that some thousands of bags in storage were involved. The rice was transferred to cold storage chambers, where It remained for a week, at the end of Which time the weevils were all destroyed. Besides being a simple remedy, It was comparatively inexpensive. In reviewing the year’s activities of the Timaru Women’s War Service Auxiliary, the president, Mrs R. B. Hart, said at the monthly meeting that 1651 women were now registered with the auxiliary, 117 had joined the W.A.A.C., 12 the W.R.N.S.. and 14 the W.A.A.F. During the year Mrs E. G. Kerr, the original president, had joined the armed forces, and the Mayoress, Mrs A. E. S. Hanan, had been elected patroness.
