SPECIAL SCIENCE BURSARIES
AWARDS TO BE MADE EBOM 1944 (P.A.) .. WELLINGTON. April 2. Tbp Minister of Education (the Hon. H- G. R. Mason) announced that it had been decided to award 15 : special bursaries .in .science ’.to students commencing their university courses at the beginning of 194 L and to award a similar numberi annually in each, succeeding year'if .the situation in regard to the great shortage of science teachers still appeared to warrant it. Bursaries would be awarded to applicants who passed the entrance examination of the University of New Zealand or equivalent examinations approved'ior the purpose, or obtained a higher leaving certificate. Preference would be given to applicants who ( showed special proficiency in mathematics and science subjects.. . The bursaries would be tenable at university colleges and holders of bursaries would be required to enter on a course for the degree of Bachelor o. Science. The maximum term of the bursary would be four years,, and the maximum value £7O annually, made up of a bursary allowance of £lO annually, tuition fees of a maximum value of i £2O annually, together with, in the case of students who had to live away from home In order to pursue their studies, a boarding allowance of £4O annually. • ! The Minister said hf felt certain the bursaries would do much to’ remedy the present .shortage of science teachers. and the increased number of science graduates would; ■ at the same time, provide a pool capable of supplying the. trained scientific' personnel necessary for any branches of industry.
