CURRENT NOTES At the last meeting of the FernsideSpringbank branch of the Women s Division of the Farmers' Union, a resolution of sympathy with Mrs H. G. Denham in the death of her husband was passed. Mrs D. Kelly,'who has been secretary of the Kirwee Mothers' Union for several years, was entertained by members of the branch and presented with a parting gift. Mrs F. N. Taylor was the speaker at the March meeting of the Prebbleton branch of the Mothers' Union. It was decided that members visit St. Saviour's Orphanage next month, instead of holding their usual meeting. Mesdames E. Carpenter and H. Cherry were the hostesses. Morten presided at a meeting of the executive committee of the Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes, held in Christchurch; It was decided to support the proposal to hold the conference this year in two sections, one meeting to be held in the North Island and one in the South Island. The annual meeting of the federation will be held in Christchurch in April. Satisfactory reports were given of Miss Cocks-Johnston's meetings, her present series being held at various centres in Banks Peninsula. Mesdames M. Davis, W. Deans, R. Macdonald, W. Waugh, and Miss E. Jacobson were .reappointed voluntary organisers. It was decided that the spinning-wheel recently purchased could be lent free of charge to institutes, the only cost to be that of freight. Prebbleton.—The president, Mrs W. Kolkman, presided at the monthly meeting of the Prebbleton Women's Institute. Mrs H. Prebble was nominated for a seat on the Canterbury Federation's executive committee. A successful drive for scrap metal and waste rubber was reported to have been made during the month. Members with husband or sons in the overseas services were entertained. Results of competitions were as follows:—Small bloom: Miss H. Carpenter 1, Mrs H. Prebble 2, Mrs J. Varley 3. Large bloom: Miss S. Horsfeld 1, Mrs W. Kolkman 2, Miss L. Giles 3. Vase of white flowers: Mrs H. Prebble 1, Miss S. Horsfeld 2, Mrs W. Kolkman 3. Plate of sausage rolls: Mrs M. Dickie 1, Mrs L. Giles 2. Glentunnel.—Mrs G. D. Marsh presided at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mesdames J. Marsh and G. D. Marsh were appointed delegates to the annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation. It was decided to support the proposal to hold the Dominion conference this year. Mrs L. A. Marshall demonstrated the making of skin gloves. Mrs D. Dickie was the winner of the social competition,' and monthly competitions were for flowers and the best darned sock. . Fernslde-Sprlngbank.—The March meeting of the Fernside-Springbank branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held at the home of Mrs T. Mcintosh. Mrs Carpenter presided and a number of woollen garments were handed In for the Merchant Navy, and a parcel of wool was distributed among knitters. Appreciation was expressed by the president of the valuable work done by Mrs Morris, a member of the branch, who'has sent many parcels. Two acknowledgements were read from soldiers overseas for recent parcels received. Cust-Wcst Eyreton.—The March meeting of the Cust-West Eyreton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Cust. Mrs M. Frizzell presided. The members decided to provide vegetables for one week to the Women's Service tlub at the beginning of June. They will help with the afternoon tea for the Boys' and Girls' Agricultural Club Show this week. An address was given by the Rev. E. Maiden on "Affairs in France," and a "bring-and-buy" sale was held to help the .branch funds. Competition winners were as follows:—Three plain scones: Mrs ,S. James 1, Mrs W. Fleming 2, Miss E. Burns 3. Bowl of mixed flowers: Mrs J. E. Horrell 1, Mrs C. D. Blackmore 2, Mrs W. Fleming 3, Mrs R. W. Bennett, Miss R. Eaglesome, and Miss N. Mcintosh, very highly commended. Knitted garments for the Merchant Navy were handed in and wool was given out.
